The focus was primarily on the worst offensive performers as that information was more readily available and more easily revealed the worst of the worst. For instances where there was a collection of putridness at a position, I factored in defense.
American League Least Valuable Players
Three members of the AL LVP team were repeat offenders...er I mean winners from last year. Phil Burns, Manny Mota, and Willie Mays Hayes managed to just fall short of LVP for the second straight year. Obviously, they need to try a little harder at failing for next year.
LF Ira Moss of the Twins is a clear best of the worst. Moss put up a final line of .230/.283/.375.
P Frank Viola, also of the Twins, put up an 8-16 record and an 8.24 ERA. How he managed to stay in the rotation all year is mystery for Robert Stack.
Ira Moss and Frank Viola! Compare your trophies to see which one sucks more, because you were the worst position player and pitcher in the American League for 2013!
National League Least Valuable Players
Unlike the American League, there were no repeat winners from last season in the National League.
Chick Gandil finished the year at .276/.371/.346. Not the worst line for all of the contenders, however, it must be placed in context. Gandil was a first baseman that put up those numbers. Just horrrrrrrrrrrrrible [/Bill Walton voice]. In addition, Gandil was atrocious around the bag committing 27 errors in 82 game.
There was a bit of a battle for the pitching slot. Dave Stewart compiled a 7.34 ERA along with an opposing OPS of .878. He just edged out numerous other candidates.
Chick Gandil and Dave Stewart! Yes, you. You were the least valuable position player and pitcher in the NAtional League for 2013.
